More than what they labeled more than what they showed

Found whole civilizations they erased from the page

Learned how the image and the story got changed

And how generations were taught to look away

Started asking questions about faith and the past

Who chose what was written who decided what would last

I still believe in God I just needed more truth

Had to separate the message from the hands that abused it

Now I look at my people and I see something strong

More than all the struggle they been showing us so long

We come from a story that is deeper than pain

And knowing where you’re from can make you stand up again

So I’m giving the next generation what I wish I had known

Teaching them the roots so they know where they’re from

If they try to hide it we’ll keep opening doors
